On Direct Sales and MLM Companies

I'm sorry, but I have to say something.

I really hate direct sales companies, as well as multi-level marketing companies.

Like, hate.

Sure, I have purchased items from these types of companies. I know people who work for these companies, too. And I understand that these people that sign up with these companies need to make money, because they got scammed into the company in the first place.

But MY GOD, these companies are the bane of my existence.

Let me tell you a little story.

There was a time when I signed up to be an independent sales person for a well-known purse/bag company. You know, the type that come to your house and have a demonstration and get you to over-pay for bags you could easily find at Target.

I thought it was a good idea, and a fun way to make some extra cash. When I signed up, I paid a nominal fee of $99, which quickly added up with shipping costs and taxes to a grand total of $122.

After my started kit arrived, I logged into the portal system and instantly became overwhelmed with how much I would have to earn in three months, how many parties I would have to book, up-lines, down-lines, etc. etc.

It was utterly ridiculous. I wanted out as quickly as I wanted in. The pressure selling, the nagging my family and friends, it just wasn't for me. Since then, a number of other companies have enticed me to join their sales force, but I have reminded myself of the money that you have to put into these companies before you can actually make any for yourself.

When I signed up with "the bag company," the woman in my up-line told me that "I had to spend money to make money."

Sure, there are some people out there who can make working for a multi-level marketing company their living. Most often, these are retirees or stay-at-home moms. Of course their are other people who make this work, I can't name them all.

But for a majority of people, and people like me, working for these companies (A.K.A. pouring money into them and praying to see a return) are a scam and a waste of time.

Where is all of this rage coming from? A person I know who "works" for a MLM company. I placed an order with this person over a year ago. The products were okay, but I don't really feel the need to purchase them again.

And yet, this person continues to try to sell me on these things. I've resorted to just ignoring her because no matter how many times I say no, they persist.

Quite frankly, it's annoying. I know you have to make money, but don't badger me. Just blow up Facebook like all of the other MLM's out there.
